RP team wins moot court battle in Japan
The University of the Philippines College of Law bested nine other universities in Asia to emerge as champion of the 2007 Asia Cup International Law Moot Court Competition held in Japan.
The victory of Anna Lorem Ramos, Janice Lee, Maricel Seno and Anya Palileo marks the third time in nine years that UP won the competition sponsored annually by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. UP shares the distinction with the National University of Singapore (NUS). UP prevailed over Ateneo and FEU in the national qualifying rounds to earn the privilege of officially representing the country in Japan.
According to Harry Roque, Director of the UP Institute of International Legal Studies and professor of the four students, the Asia Cup is a prestigious regional moot court competition where law students showcase their skill at both written and oral pleadings. “The team’s victory indicate the students’ strong interest in international law not just for purely academic reasons but for its practical applications as well. The conflict in Mindanao, for example, is a perfect source of application for the law on armed conflict.”
The Asia Cup requires students need to demonstrate their mastery of public international law, humanitarian law, human rights and refugee law in acting as legal counsels arguing before a simulated International Court of Justice.
The panel of judges was composed Dr. Jean-Marie Henckaerts of the International Committee of the Red Cross who is also author of the seminal three volume textbook on International Humanitarian Law, Ambassador Chusei Yamada of the United Nations International Law Commission, Ambassador Tetsuyo Endo of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Dr. Umesh Kadam of the ICRC.
The International Law Moot Court Competition "Asia Cup" is a moot court competition where students from Asian countries contend for their ability in writing memorials and presenting oral pleadings on a fictitious lawsuit case concerning international human rights and humanitarian laws.
It intends to promote of knowledge and understandings of international human rights and humanitarian law, to build and enlarge human networks by inviting Asian promising students and to contribute to protection and enforcement of human rights, not only in Japan but also around the Asian region.
